aphorisms

I have done collage over the past couple of years, mostly consisting of cutting up prints of my photos, most of the photos being kind of abstract to begin with, and then gluing them on backing board. I started with 16×20, and then moved to smaller ones, 12×12. Then I got the idea to take a label maker, like from the 1960s, and do a satirical take on aphorisms with words on the pieces.

I ended up with three of the larger ones, and eight of the small ones, and then framed them in metal silver frames. I completed these in early summer and they have been hanging on my wall since then with no particular plan in mind but a hope to display them as a part of a future exhibition somewhere.

I recently went with my wife, and then again with a friend, to two photography exhibitions at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, VA. One of the pieces was a grouping of several related photographs, individually framed and put next to each other in a randomly sort of way. I really liked the concept, and yesterday I decided to do something similar with my collage aphorism pieces, creating one piece out of it. I first arranged them on the floor, and then cleared a wall space and hung them. I am very pleased with the result.

Here are some of the labels up close.

Not usually this long winded, or as detailed about process, but wanted to share something different.

Cheers!
